Swimming pool chemicals are required to keep your pool free from bacteria. Blue Horizons swimming pool chlorine comes in the form of granules or tablets.
The most common way to kill bacteria in your pool and keep your swimming pool water healthy is to use chlorine. Before using chlorine, it is important to have a correct water balance first. Once this has been achieved, chlorine levels between 1.0-3.0 mg/l should be satisfactory to preserve bacteria free swimming pool water. There are two ways to tell if your pool is a well-managed chlorine treated swimming pool is that is will have no odour and the level of chloramines will be less than 0.5 mg/l. Blue Horizons have a wide range of swimming pool chemicals for you to choose from to suit your swimming pool requirements.
Often the chlorine is lost from the swimming pool through the sun’s UV rays. By using a chlorine stabiliser, this will reduce the amount of chlorine that is lost to the sunlight. Ideally the chlorine stabilizer level should be 60 mg/l. If you need to increase the level, use Blue Horizons Chlorine Stabiliser granules or tablets. To decrease the level, it is necessary to drain some of the water out and refill with some fresh. Additionally, regular backwashing of the filter will keep this level low.
One of the main problems with pool water is chlorine demand, this is the amount of chlorine required to kill the algae, bacteria and other germs in your pool. To reduce this chlorine demand it is necessary to shock the water, using either Blue Horizons Granular Shock or Shock ‘n’ Froc Granules.
Along with chlorine, bromine is also another type of pool sanitiser, which needs to be dispensed via a chemical feeder. There are many differences between the two. Bromine, unlike chlorine, has very little smell, causes very little or no eye or skin irritation, is more efficient than chlorine over a wider pH band. Additionally, it is not affected by sunlight and does not require any extra chlorine stabiliser. If you wish to use bromine instead of chlorine, we recommend Blue Horizons Bromine Tablets.
Whether you are using chlorine or bromine, all of these levels can change over the course of the season due to rainwater, fresh water and swimming pool chemicals. Therefore, it is important to check the levels regularly.
